2008 Airstream Classic

The rear jalousie windows and narrow eyebrow door window make this 1981 or older. Unloaded weight is certainly nowhere near 800#, probably more like 1100-1200#. The main bed is about 45x76, so a small double.

+10 Weight is higher than 800 pounds +10 Bed is not queen. Even the newer "Scamp big bed" is not queen size. Big bed was not made back then. The 44 inch wide bed is 5 inches wider than a twin bed. An older Scamp 13 like this one is still a desirable trailer. I would not over promise on weight or bed size, could be a can of worms with a novice buyer. If you really think it weighs about 800 pounds, take it to the nearest truck stop, they pretty much all have scales. Drop it on the scale and get a certified weight. Buyers WILL want to know the real weight.

Curious - how can 2 twin beds and a queen size bed fit in there? Maybe you meant two hammocks? Is the trailer registered, do you have a valid, transferable certificate of ownership?

It looks like a gaucho couch up front with two kids sized bunks.

Posted by Jon in AZ (3 years ago)

Yes its the standard Scamp layout 1 with the small bunks in the front. Not seeing any cushions in the photos, nor a stove or icebox. Nothing on the tongue (battery or LP tank). May need an axle.

I’d change the word “may” to the word “will”

Axle issue

Im a complete RV newby looking to buy. How do you know if the axle needs replacing? And what does that cost?

This is indeed an interesting project Scamp. I find it intriguing that the trailer has been gutted: no propane tank, fridge, cushions and that the stove is there but beneath the portable camp stove. Says to me that this is one step up from the gutted shells some other owners have started work on. As for the axle, seeing the rest of the Scamp, I would definitely check it out. I live in Canada so I can only quote the price I paid in Canadian dollars but a new 10 electric brake complete axle set me back $375 and worth every penny. Dead simple to swap out. This ad makes me happy with the 13 Boler which basically is the Scamp 13 that I bought. Mine came with everything but the fridge. It too has been a project but they have been either modifications/upgrades or minor repairs. Axle and fridge were the two biggie purchases.

Its a guess but an educated one. Axle life from manufacturer is 15 years. This trailer has a lot of sag, see how low the body sits and the clearance around the wheels. Without knowing if the axle is new, best to assume replacement is warranted.

Around here axle replacement is about $1,000 installed. May be cheaper or more where you live. Almost all of these axles are welded on so its not a simple unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one.

I just checked and you are quite correct. The suspension on this year of Scamp is not supposed to be axle but torsion. It would pay to have the suspension checked and if necessary replaced. Can anyone answer the question about how to go about this. My situation was simple: my frame was replaced by PO who had an axle with leaf springs installed which raised my unit well off the ground (was used as a hunting bedroom).

Hi Zach! I’m interested in your scamp. Do you still have it? Thanks, Kandace

Maybe it's a 78 instead of an 87. It also looks like it has 4-lug wheels. When did that change? My 75 Scamp has 5-lug wheels, but I don't know it they are original or not. If his is worth sever, mine must be worth a small fortune. Harold

A 5-lug torsion axle on a 1975 is not original. Thats a good thing. One test of a rubber torsion axle is to lift the frame on one side and see how much the wheel drops relative to the shell. Little or no movement means a dead axle.
