Who installed the solar panels? Is there an air gap under them? Is that pvc 4x4 screwed down? Can it be removed to have a proper RV cable entry installed?

Posted by OCJohn (2 years ago)

Install and all fab work is mine. There are quite a few different theories about flex panel installation. (As stated in the ad, they are Renogy 160s...) And after reading all the pros and cons about vented/non-vented, I chose the cleaner, non-vented approach as shown (and I think recommend) in the manufacturer’s literature. Panels and cable box are both affixed with 3M VHB. The box is further secured by the cable pass through nipple that is threaded and sealed on both ends, thru the bottom of the weather proof box and the underside of the pop-top. I also chafed at using the very non-aerodynamic cable box. But after ordering (and returning) three different versions of “proper” RV cable entry boxes from different manufacturers (all garbage IMO), I gave up and went with a more durable solution I knew would last. There were also space limitations that dictated the box location and cable touting for what I had in mind. The 160w panels are mounted as far forward as possible to leave space for two additional 100w panels mounted at the rear. That left little room for the entry box. The four-panel goal also meant planning for four pair of cables rather than two. Choosing between a kludge of extra long solar cables and Y-connectors into one crappy RV box or two crappy RV boxes mounted sideways (because space...) seemed like a lose/lose to me. To say I was disappointed in the selection and quality of available solar do-dads is an understatement at best. It was a very frustrating journey. So the grey fiber reinforced weather box was chosen, cut down and marked for drilling on two sides, 90 from each other. One side for the 160w panels you see in the photos. And the other yet-to-be-dilled, rear side for future use with the 100w panels. Four panels with one box and a minimum of unnecessary cable. No doubt my decisions are not ideal. But they were thoughtfully considered and crafted for low weight, low maintenance and maximum life. Panels and box are stuck for good. There are no leaks, and there are no vented gaps to attract dirt or moisture. Yes I’m losing some efficiency when the non-vented panels get hot. But flat mounted panels are inefficient anyway. That’s why I planned for 520 watts of them. The extra weight of mounting adjustable angle panels was a non-starter on that pop-top. Hope that helps.

Indeed, thanks.
The air gap question is just because I have seen a few flex panels that have cracked fiberglass roofs without an air gap. There are certainly cheap cable entry plates, but the aerodynamics are worth it, especially with driving rain. Ive seen leaks from the strain relief connectors when mounted facing forward, but usually those are the cheap Chinese connectors.

That said, how about shipping that bad boy to Canada?

Id be delighted. :)

If youre in BC, theres a remote chance well take it to Waterloo OR in two weeks. Send me a deposit and Ill definitely be there.
