Lol. I have always checked with a bathroom scale! So obviously need some explanations about this� how different?
Bathroom scales don't go up to 350+ pounds.... I also have the Sherline. It will sit on some heavy blocks and the stem fits into the tongue (where the ball would go) and you can lower the tongue down to get the actual weight. I use it when loading bikes onto the rear hitch and moving the spare tire onto the tongue in front of the propane tanks to validate appropriate tongue weight.

Oh, gotchya. My tongue weighs under 160lbs� so the bathroom scale works fine for me:)

More photos ,as to bathroom scales... Don't see any of the trailer shops using them. Not saying they won't work , just not designed to measure weight like applied to ball. Big thing is to have point of contact at same height as tow ball. Read up on folcrum for better understanding . I replaced the 2,000 lb. gauge on my Sherline with a 1,000 lb. gauge. It's easier to read ( my hitch weighs 320 lbs. ) and more accurate in the middle of the range.
